Motorists are more likely to have their cars stolen in Kensington and Chelsea than any other place in England and Wales, new figures show.

It comes as exclusive analysis by Getwestlondon reveals there were 4,752 reported motor vehicle thefts in west London in the year to June 2015 - the equivalent of one in every 428 people.

Kensington and Chelsea was the worst of the eight west London boroughs listed with 773 vehicles stolen, accounting for a theft for every 202 people.

It topped the charts for the worst figure for any Community Safety Partnership area in England and Wales, excluding the City of London, which was omitted because it’s low resident population skews the figures.

At the other end of the scale Harrow was the least likely borough in west London for motor thefts with the equivalent of one in every 1,374 people having one of their vehicles stolen in the year to June.

The Royal borough also recorded a big jump in the crime, with an increase of nearly 30% compared to January to June 2014. Hounslow was the only west London borough to show a fall.

Overall, the number of vehicles stolen across west London has increased over the past year, up by 11.6 per cent in the year to June 2015 compared to the year to June 2014 and outstripping the national average increase by four times over.

Across England and Wales 71,672 motor vehicles were reported as stolen by the police between January and June this year, a rise of 2.8 per cent compared to the previous year and the equivalent of one theft for every 801 people.

Fareham in Hampshire was the least likely place for a vehicle theft with one for every 4,764 people in the year to June 2015.
