The Duchess of Cambridge has given birth to a baby girl weighing 8lbs 3oz.

Prince William was present for the birth of the royal baby on Saturday morning at 8.34am at the Lindo Wing, St Mary's Hospital in Paddington.

HRH The Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh, the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Harry and members of both families have been informed.

Kensington Palace confirmed in a tweet that Kate Middleton and the baby are doing well.

The duchess had earlier been admitted to the Lindo Wing at St Mary's Hospital where Prince George was born in July 2013.

Catherine travelled from the palace with her husband Prince William and was admitted at 6am on Saturday, May 2.

The latest royal joins the line of succession behind her grandfather Prince Charles, father Prince William and brother Prince George.

On Thursday, during an official engagement, Prince Charles had said he was hoping the duchess gave birth to a girl.

Today he got his wish.

Political leaders took to twitter to congratulate the royal couple on the birth of their second child.

The Lindo Wing at St Mary's Hospital in west London is where Kate and William's first child, Prince George, was born in July 2013.

Both Prince William and his brother Prince Harry were also born at the Lindo Wing.

Catherine went on maternity leave on March 27 when she carried out her last official public engagements before the birth.

Fans of the Royal Family have been camping outside the hospital with flags and banners over the last two weeks.

However in an effort not to repeat scenes at the time of Prince George's birth, the world's press were stopped from camping outside in advance.
