The jury in the trial of an internationally respected heart surgeon has been discharged after convicting him of molesting two women but failing to reach a verdict on a charge of rape.

Mohamed Amrani, 53, who worked at the Harefield Hospital in west London, was on trial at the Old Bailey over accusations from five women between 2001 and 2014.

The consultant, of Harrow, denied all the claims against him.

On Thursday (April 27), a jury found him guilty of twice indecently assaulting a woman by groping her breasts through her clothes between 2003 and 2004 and sexually assaulting another woman in 2014.

Amrani was acquitted of four more counts of indecent assault , two of assault by penetration and one of sexual assault.

After deliberating for 23 hours, jurors were discharged, having failed to reach a verdict on a charge of rape.

Judge Anne Molyneux allowed the prosecution seven days to consider whether they would seek a retrial and adjourned the case until May 5.

The court had heard how one victim had complained to the hospital about being indecently assaulted and was allegedly told "just ignore him, he does it to everyone".

Her husband described it as "a pretty devastating event" in her life. He told the court she came home and was "very very upset", adding: "My wife told me she had been groped and I understood that to be touching her over her clothing in a sexual manner."

The consultant has performed a string of life-saving operations around the world and hit the headlines in 2007 when he performed the UK's first double heart valve replacement using keyhole surgery.
