A man arrested in a dramatic police action which saw dozens of officers attend a retail park in Southall has been released under investigation.

Armed police and riot police were called to the Hayes Bridge Retail Park in Southall on Sunday evening (May 28), where a car meet was taking place.

The Metropolitan Police told getwestlondon it was looking for a man who was reportedly carrying a firearm in a car that was being driven in Ealing .

Police followed the man to the car park where car enthusiasts were holding a car meet to show off their modifications.

Police arrested the man on suspicion of possessing a firearm although no firearm has been recovered.

During the incident a female police officer was punched in the face.

Another police officer suffered a broken finger.

The founder of West London Meet told getwestlondon that at first just one car with two officers turned up at the retail park.

"Once the two officers found who they were looking for, they tried to subdue the suspect," he said.

"At that point the crowd that had gathered around the officers started to throw things and shout offensive words.

"From that point on things got out of control.

"The officers called for back-up and before we knew it there were 20 to 30 police cars.

"Armed police turned up with police dogs to relax the crowd as everyone was full of adrenaline at that point.

"The police car blocked off the entrance to the car park and made enough space at the exit for one car to leave at a time.

"I personally saw over 100 police officers at the scene."

Footage sent in to getwestlondon showed a man being grabbed by a police dog as a police officer struggled to control him.

A police helicopter hovered over the park for around two hours, until around 10.30pm, with residents complaining about the noise.

Alongside the helicopter there were loud sirens, shouting and the sound of engines revving.

Police made six further arrests for public order offences and other offences including possession of drugs and assault on police.
