A wheelchair-bound man is pleading to be allowed home from his Dubai holiday from hell so he can receive urgent medical attention.

Charlie Goldstein has been detained in the UAE since March, when he attempted to return from a holiday he bought for himself and his mother as thanks for her looking after him following his left leg amputation.

Since then the 38-year-old, who had been using a prosthetic leg, has been left stranded in the oil-rich Emirate, forced to sleep in temporary accommodation and rely on the kindness and generosity of friends and family at home to survive.

Matters worsened for him when he fell and broke his right leg in eight places in September and he is so desperate for his nightmare to end he told Getwestlondon : “I would happily give my other leg to get out of here.”

Mr Goldstein, from Kensington , had his leg amputated in August last year after he fell from a two-storey high balcony in Oakley Street, Chelsea , in 2013.

His left foot was left hanging to the rest of his body by a thread. He smashed his pelvis in 14 places, suffered head injuries, lost five pints of blood and was in a coma. His parents were told to prepare for the worst.

Attempts to save the foot ultimately failed and soon after, he moved in with his mum Elizabeth Stratton in Fulham so she could provide care.

A friend came to join the pair on their holiday and they hired a car. But when Mr Goldstein attempted to board his flight home on March 25 he was stopped at immigration and told he had a fine of £900 to pay, which had to be settled before he could depart.

He said he was willing to pay the amount as he had a urgent surgery on his left leg booked for March 27. But he was then taken to the car hire business, where he was told to pay a figure close to £100,000 before he would be allowed to leave.

Two months ago, he fell because his prosthetic limb was only meant to be used for eight weeks and is now ill-fitting, causing him to shatter his right leg.

He said: “I was given a temporary cast but I have no insurance so they won’t operate on me.”

He is now confined to a wheelchair and fears the leg may also end up being amputated. He said: “It’s been hell and its getting worse and worse.

“I have been through trauma, I have lost a leg, I've had more than 20 operations, and this is 10-times worse. I would give my other leg to get out of here. I’ll probably it anyway because it’s been broken in eight places for eight weeks and not really been treated.

“I can’t look after myself, I’m completely on my own. I’m frightened.”

Mr Goldstein also missed an operation to remove bolts from pelvis, and which can cause long-term health problems such as incontinence and impotence.

He said: “I’ve never been so scared of anything so much in my whole life. It’s an absolute living hell.

“I’m in so much pain. Half my medication is illegal here and I can’t afford what isn’t. I’m completely and utterly skint."

His mum says the ordeal has been horrific and stressful, and has tried lobbying the UK government but to no avail.

Ms Stratton said: “My son provided written evidence from medical doctors in the UK and the UAE to show just how severe and urgent his condition is. I hoped that he would be returned here on human rights grounds alone.

“Surely there is an obligation to provide him with the treatment he needs when they have forced him to stay there and prevented him from obtaining his scheduled treatment in the UK.”

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office told Getwestlondon it can only offer “consular support”.

A spokeswoman said: “A British national has been unable to leave Dubai since 25 March 2015 due to an ongoing police investigation. We are in regular contact with the individual and their family to provide advice and support.

“We have also raised this case with the UAE authorities, including making them aware of the individual’s medical condition. We will continue to provide consular support; however we cannot interfere in another country’s legal processes.”

Lobby group Detained in Dubai is helping Mr Goldstein and started a charity page to help him. Founder Radha Stirling says in effect he has been “jailed on the whim of another person” and continued: “We ask the authorities in the UAE to please look into the very urgent case of a very ill British National, in need of multiple and urgent operations and treatments.

“I am sure the higher authorities of the UAE do not condone this practice and now is the perfect time to intervene and regulate this issue.”

A spokesperson from the UAE Embassy in London said it was unable to comment this week, but hoped to give a statement to Getwestlondon next week.
