A large sinkhole has appeared after a burst water main caused severe flooding affecting people in Ickenham and Ruislip this morning.

Residents living in the area around Breakspear Road South have had their water supply turned off since the early hours of Wednesday (January 4).

Reports first emerged on Twitter of low water pressure or no running water from residents living in Ickenham.

@CazzaN69 tweeted: "Any problems in Ickenham this morning? Our water pressure is really low."

Motorists have been urged to avoid the area due to delays as the road has been closed near the junction with Swakeleys Road in Ickenham up to Tile Kiln Lane in Ruislip.

The road surface is in poor condition and there has been a lot of damage.

Engineers from Affinity Water are at the scene working as quickly as possible to deal with the aftermath of the incident.

The company has managed to restore water supply at a low pressure while the repairs are taking place.

Affinity Water stated: "We have successfully isolated the burst water main and diverted water from other areas in order to restore your supply during this repair.

"We anticipate that all customers affected by this burst will now have water restored to the property however this may be at a lower pressure than normal until the repair is complete.

"We will provide an update and estimate on when this work should be completed as soon as one becomes available.

"We are sorry for the disruption to your supply and thank you for your patience."

Hillingdon police first reported major flooding due to a burst water main just after 6am and advised motorists to avoid the area.
