Hundreds of angry residents were fuming after being left without hot water and heating for five days at an estate in Brentford.

People living at the six-block Brentford Towers and Haverfield estates on Green Dragon Lane were left in the cold after a part to repair the boiler damage had to be ordered from Germany.

The problem was the result of a mains power cut in the Brentford area on Thursday (June 2) which disrupted the electrical supply to Brentford Towers boiler house, affecting 528 flats.

One caller who wished to remain anonymous said: “We were left in freezing cold flats. A new housing estate blocks the natural sunlight to our flats.

“I am disabled and am getting ill from this. If they don’t fix this I will end up in hospital. There are elderly people living in these places too.

“Why hasn’t the boiler system been updated for 20-plus years?”

The system in operation is known as a district heating system which sees hot water and heating supplied from one source to a group of buildings.

People also took to social media site Twitter to report their frustration at the situation.

Councillor Katherine Dunne, cabinet member for housing, equalities and inclusion at Hounslow Council , said: “The power was re-established quickly, but the main communal boilers were seriously affected by this power cut and various electrical control components in each boiler were damaged.

“T Brown, the contractors working on behalf of Hounslow council were immediately on site during Thursday evening and all through Friday, to try and resolve the problem.

“Parts for the boilers were sent to a specialist to see if they could be refurbished but were found to be beyond repair.

“The replacement parts which are only available from Germany, were ordered straight away and arrived on Tuesday (June 7)...and immediately engineers were on site at Brentford Towers replacing the burner motors in the heating system.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused to residents.”

The council has confirmed the boiler system which is regularly maintained and kept in working condition is up and running fully at Brentford Towers.

In addition the contractors have added a surge protection to help reduce the risk of this issue happening again.

Hounslow council has also said the boilers are to be replaced as part of the estate’s refurbishment works.
