A man has made it his mission to go around the streets of Hounslow collecting empty drink cans in the name of charity.

For the past 18 months, Richard Gregory, of Summerwood Road, Isleworth , has been patrolling the borough with his litter picker and bin in tow on his days off.

The 61-year-old dubbed the 'can man' has taken it upon himself to do the good deed and is currently collecting and crushing 1,000 cans a month.

Mr Gregory sports a hi-vis jacket while out and about, with information on the back detailing his 'Can Man' recycling efforts.

His favourite hotspots are Hounslow West, Hounslow car parks and Feltham town centre.

After collecting the cans, he crushes 200 into a green bag and takes them over to the recycling centre.

Mr Gregory said: "I started recycling cans for charity because I saw so many cans lying about everywhere and then found out there was a recycling centre in Feltham that pays for scrap aluminium.

"I go out on my days off [he works four days on, four days off] collecting empty cans.

"The money I receive I give to four charities - Cancer Research, Help for Heroes, British Heart Foundation and Guide Dogs."

In the first year he donated £288 in total split between the four charities and recycled around 14,000 cans.

Since then he is close to reaching the 20,000 mark.
