West London boroughs have been ranked from healthiest to most unfit - with one borough seriously lacking in physical activity.

Hounslow is one of the least active places in the country - with almost a third of adults getting less than 30 minutes of exercise a week.

A government survey found that 28.6% of adults in Hounslow engaged in less than half an hour of physical activity per week in 2015/16.

Close behind was Hillingdon, which saw the second highest percentage of adults in the area who were physically inactive with 26.9%.

Brent was third with more than a quarter of adults or 26.1% physically inactive.

The fittest west London borough, and the only one to beat the London average of 22.2%, was Hammersmith and Fulham, with 20% of it's residents deemed inactive.

Being physically inactive can have severe consequences for your health such as an increased risk of heart disease or cancer.

“Physical activity” is defined as “moderate aerobic activity such as cycling or brisk walking”.

The figures are based on a new survey carried out by Ipsos MORI among a total sample size of 192,158 people for Public Health England.

Physical inactivity is the fourth leading risk factor for global mortality accounting for 6% of deaths globally.

People who have a physically active lifestyle have a 20-35% lower risk of cardiovascular disease, coronary heart disease and stroke compared to those who have a sedentary lifestyle.

A physically active person get two and a half hours or more intense aerobic activity per week.

Regular physical activity is also associated with a reduced risk of diabetes, obesity, osteoporosis and colon or breast cancer and with improved mental health.

And the percentage of adults that report being physically inactive increases dramatically with age, from 14.2% among 19 to 24 year olds to 63.5% among those aged 85 or older.
