Tesco has agreed to sell off its unused land to property investors in a business deal that includes land by Hounslow bus garage.

The London Road area was originally earmarked for a 267-home development in a 21 storey tower, as well as a new Tesco Express.

However, plans are due to change for the land as the sale from Tesco's Spenhill development arm to investors Meyer Bergman is confirmed.

Leader of Hounslow Council Councillor Steve Curran said: “The Tesco site is in an important location within our town centre.

"It is identified within the Hounslow Town Centre masterplan for mixed use, residential and retail.

“We look forward to working with the new owners to prepare new proposals that will help regenerate this stretch of London Road.”

The retail giant said it "marks further progress" in the company's strategy to "strengthen its balance sheet".

Chief executive of Tesco Dave Lewis said: “Since announcing our decision to build fewer stores we have been working with Meyer Bergman to bring forward investment on our Spenhill sites.

"We are very pleased to have agreed a deal with Meyer Bergman."

President of Hounslow Central Residents' Association Trevor Timpson said Hounslow residents will watch carefully to see what plans the new developers propose.

"We very much hope the development will revise the original Ventana tower plans so that building on the site doesn't interfere with surrounding property or with traffic in the area" said Mr Timpson.

"We'll watch to see if our suspicion that all they want to do is develop flats rather than create businesses."

Meyer Berman have not yet confirmed their plans for the site, although a spokesman for the developers said they may be "progressing plans that Tesco Spenhill had in place."

They said: “We are looking forward to working closely with the London Borough of Hounslow and the local community in bringing forward our application for a residential scheme at London Road.

"It is still early in our ownership of the site, and we will update the community as matters progress.”

Former plans for the Ventana Tower from Spenhill saw opposition and concern from Hounslow residents who said the high rise block could pose a danger to planes landing at Heathrow.

In a viewing of the tower plans last year, Hounslow Town Centre Neighbourhood Forum Group member Chris Durkin had said he was also worried the height of the tower would 'set a precedent' for more high-rise buildings in the neighbourhood.

Five of the 13 sites sold by Tesco's Spenhill development arm are in west London, including spots in Kensington, Hounslow, Fulham, and two sites in Hillingdon.
