Expansion plans at three secondary schools - at a cost of £17.9m - have been granted initial funding for phase one of the project to go-ahead in Hounslow.

A total of £2.6m has been released by the council to fund a feasibility study into extending three schools in Chiswick, Heston and Isleworth as the need for additional secondary school places grows.

Chiswick School will receive £1.5m, Heston Community School £0.1m and Isleworth and Syon School £1m, making up part of stage one of the secondary schools expansion programme.

Plans if agreed would allow Chiswick School to expand from a 7.2 to nine form entry (FE), Heston Community School from 6.5 to eight FE and Isleworth and Syon School from 5.8 to eight FE by September 2017.

The estimated construction cost to expand by a combined 5.5 FE is estimated at £15.3m, which if approved, would see Chiswick receive a further £8.8m, Heston £0.6m and Isleworth and Syon £5.9m.

These changes are a giant step towards achieving the estimated places needed to meet demand by 2019.

Members of the borough's cabinet, on February 10, approved a recommendation by the cabinet member for education and children’s services councillor Tom Bruce to release the initial funding of £2.6m.

Mr Bruce said: “Expanding secondary school capacity to meet the growing demand means that we will be able to offer as many children as possible a local school place in their home authority.

“The expansion programme is part of our investment in education – ensuring that there will be an even better choice of schools for local children, helping us to provide them with the best start in life”.

Current projections show the need for 29.5 forms of entry, classes of 30 pupils, will be required to meet demand by 2019 - the equivalent of four large secondary schools.

There are currently applications to build two new free schools in the borough to provide up to 12 FE, in central Hounslow, Brentford and Isleworth areas.

To determine spaces required from existing secondary schools, the secondary expansion programme will be reviewed following the outcome of the free school applications which will be known in March.

Until then the remainder of the estimated £17.9m funding will not be released.

If needed, further capacity can be provided by bulge classes at Feltham Community College.

The schools expansion programme was developed following a report to cabinet in September last year outlining how continued growth in the number of children in Hounslow would result in the need for additional secondary school places.

Recently statutory notices to expand special education needs (SEN) schools were approved at Marjory Kinnon School in Bedfont and Oaklands School in Isleworth.

Construction work has already started to expand Lindon Bennett SEN School in Hanworth.
