A school in Hounslow has been crowned king of the streets, after a walking competition in which contestants covered a blister-inducing 53,000 miles.

St Mary's Catholic Primary School in Isleworth won the Beat the Street challenge in which seven primary schools and more than 4,200 people across Isleworth competed to see who could walk, cycle, scoot or run the furthest.

Between them, participants in the contest clocked up 52,775 miles during the seven week contest - the equivalent of circling the globe more than twice.

Pupils, staff and parents at St Mary's walked 15,605 miles - half a lap of the earth - to top the overall leaderboard and the most miles walked per team member.

They won £1,000 for topping both leaderboards, with £250 for the overall runners-up Isleworth Town Primary and £150 for third-placed Marlborough Primary School.

St Mary's headteacher Farley Marsh said: "Beat the Street has been an extremely enjoyable and fun experience. I've been so impressed with how the whole community has increased their walking, scooting and cycling. Let's keep it up!"

The competition, funded by Hounslow Council , was held to reduce people's reliance on cars and encourage them to tke more exercise.

More than 175,000 people played Beat the Street competitions across the country last year, including 11,000 people in Cranford, Heston and Feltham, who between them covered over 39,000 miles .
