Hounslow 's planning officers have been named the best in the country at a national awards ceremony.

Hounslow Council were crowned local authority team of the year at the Planning and Placemaking Awards 2016.

The council's planners were also highly commended in the award for development management, at the ceremony held in London on June 23.

The council said the recognition reflected its efforts to engage as early as possible with residents and developers over upcoming schemes.

It highlighted planners' work on developments including the new civic centre , which was approved earlier this year, and hundreds of homes, shops and a cinema , which are due to be built in Hounslow town centre, subject to a public inquiry.

It also hailed their role in the drive to expand schools and build new ones to meet the growing demand for school places .

Council leader Steve Curran said: "More so than not, the planning arm of a council is often talked about when something has gone wrong.

"It is great news that all the hard work that goes on to make sure new schools can be built, improvements are made to town centres for the benefit of residents and plans for new housing developments are recognised."
