Still unsure about whether your child's car seat is in keeping with the new law?

Two free car seat clinics are being held by Hounslow Council's road safety team to give parents another chance to make sure they are fully aware of the new regulations.

The new law came into force earlier than expected, and similar sessions last year found nearly 80% of chilldren's car seats have not been fitted correctly.

Members of the team will be in Isleworth and Southall later this month:

  • Saturday (May 13) at Tesco Osterley car park, Syon Lane, Isleworth, from 10am to 4pm
  • Monday (May 22) at Tesco Bulls Bridge car park, Hayes Road, Southall, from midday to 6pm
Here's everything you need to know about the law changes on car seats

On both days checks will be carried out on the seats and any problems corrected.

Advice will also be given on the new law changes on travelling with children in the car.

The main change is booster cushions made from March 2017 will only be approved for older children, 125cm tall and weighing 22kg equivalent to three stone and above.

Previous rules allowed children weighing 15kgs (2st 5lbs) - which can include children as young as three to four years - to use a booster cushion (backless booster seat).

With the change in law, manufacturers are no longer be able to sell backless booster seats for smaller children.

The change will not affect existing models which are still legal to use, however safety experts recommend a high-backed booster seat as it provides more protection to the head and chest in the event of a collision.
