A Hounslow Council bin lorry caught fire on the A4 in Brentford, causing partial road closures and disruption to refuse collection.

The visible incident could be seen by many and London Fire Brigade (LFB) received nine separate 999 calls alerting them to the incident on Tuesday (15 September).

An LFB spokesperson, said: "Firefighters quickly dealt with a lorry that was on fire on Traffic Avenue in Brentford this afternoon. Brigade control officers took nine 999 calls on the visible incident.

"The cab of the vehicle was damaged by the blaze. There are no reports of any injuries."

It took just half an hour for firefighters to get the blaze under control, after the Brigade was called at around 1:30pm.

One lane on the A4 was shut whilst firefighters tackled the incident, with crew from Heston fire station at the scene.

An eyewitness, James Ayling, who watched the blaze unfold, told The Evening Standard: “The lorry pulled off the A4 with some smoke coming from behind the cab.

"It smoked a lot for about 20 minutes before the flames appeared, then it really caught.”

Cllr Amrit Mann, Deputy Leader of Hounslow Council, said: “The police and fire service are currently dealing with an incident involving a refuse collection vehicle, which was on fire on the eastbound carriageway of the A4, at the junction with Transport Avenue, Brentford.

“One lane of the eastbound carriageway is closed and the police are managing traffic at the scene.

“The fire has been put out and no one has been hurt.

“An investigation will be carried out by the fire brigade to determine the cause of fire.

“Another refuse truck has taken over the damaged vehicle’s rounds but some rubbish collections in the borough may be affected today. Residents should visit Hounslow Council's website where we will post more information as it becomes available.”
