This is the clock sold on Amazon which had alarm bells ringing for all the wrong reasons when it sparked a bomb scare in Hounslow .

Police were called to an estate in Kew Bridge Road, Brentford , on Friday (June 24) afternoon to reports of a suspicious package.

The road was cordoned off and residents were evacuated from their homes as police investigated, only to discover the suspected explosive was actually a harmless timepiece.

The clock, advertised as a Defuse a Bomb Novelty Digital Alarm Clock, by Dynamite Design, is available on Amazon, priced £22.99.

The clock bears all the hallmarks of an incendiary device, at least of the kind you might see on a B movie thriller - with exposed wires, an LED 'countdown' display and sticks of 'dynamite', which are presumably just rolls of cardboard or plastic.

The street was cordoned off as police dealt with a bomb scare in Brentford over what turned out to be a clock

A Met spokesman said police were called to the scene shortly after 2.10pm.

He said a small number of residents were evacuated before officers were stood down at 3.45pm after the item was deemed "non-suspicious".

Police refused to comment on whether officers saw the funny side or had given the owner a serious ticking off.

Hounslow Police tweeted a photo of the clock, accompanied by the message: "Officers attended a call to Brentford believed to be a suspicious package, turned out to be a clock sold on Amazon."

The photo was hastily removed from Twitter but police tweeted: "Incident in #Brentford now dealt with road closures will be opening shortly. Thank you for your patience."

Lauren Rolfe, who was among those evacuated from the estate, took refuge in a nearby pub from where she tweeted about the drama unfolding in Pump House Crescent.

It's not the first time an innocent item has sparked a major security alert.

In February, getwestlondon reported how Turnham Green Tube station was closed after someone found a script containing the word "bomb".
