A revolutionary style of bin will be seen on the streets of Westminster in the coming months, after the council admitted it is “lagging behind” other authorities.

See-through bins will be placed in problem areas across the city, at sites where items that can be recycled are currently being mixed with items that cannot.

The aim is to illustrate what materials have been placed inside the bin to help the public distinguish between items that can be recycled with items that cannot – known as contamination.

During a recent trial, 10 sites saw a reduction in contamination, with six sites located around mansion blocks, housing estates and in public areas eliminating contamination completely.

In total, 25 new bins will be put on selected streets from September.

Cllr Richard Beddoe, Westminster City Council cabinet member for city management, said: “Sometimes the simplest ideas can be the best, and this one is certainly proving to be effective.

“We cannot ignore the fact that Westminster is lagging behind much of London when it comes to recycling so, over the coming months, we have a number of initiatives to enable residents to do more.”
