The historic Randalls department store in Uxbridge will be converted to flats and shop space after planning approval was given to developers.
In 2015 Sir John Randall, the MP for Uxbridge and South Ruislip before Boris Johnson, closed the store which has borne the family name since 1891.
Property developers Inland Homes bought the Vine Street building in October 2015 and a planning application to convert the site to housing was submitted last year.
Hillingdon Council approved the scheme at the major applications planning committee meeting held in Uxbridge.
Speaking at the meeting, Cllr John Oswell said: “Another really nice scheme that's come before us tonight and aren't we lucky because we have had some bum deals.
“This is a good scheme I think and I'm really quite pleased with it.”
He said he was pleased the Old Fire Station Building on the site would be maintained and converted to duplex apartments.
The project will see the demolition of the 1960s extension to the building as well as the caretakers flat and warehouse buildings.
Developers have received permission to convert part of the first floor to flats, build a second storey roof extension for apartments, external restoration work.
There will be three new residential blocks ranging from three to six storeys and a new ground floor retail unit.
The scheme was unanimously approved by the council.
In total the new development will consist of 58 residents units and 750 square metres of commercial floorspace.
The store was recently used as a set by films crews.
The film believed to be about the author of the hugely popular Winnie the Pooh children's books., and starring Margot Robbie.
