We have certainly been spoilt by the weather over the last couple of days, it has been so warm, we could have mistaken the weather for that of a summer's day.

It was in fact the end of spring which brought us such beautiful weather, as Thursday (June 1) officially marks the start of summer, in the meteorological world.

In the astronomical calendar, the start of summer is marked a few weeks later, on June 21.

According to the Met Office, the meteorological seasons consist of splitting the seasons up into four periods, each with three months.

This means summer consists of June, July and August, autumn is September to November, the winter months are December to February, and March, April and May are the spring months.

So as we welcome in the start of summer, what can we expect from the weather?

According to the Met Office, the warmest summer was in 2006, with an average temperature of 15.8°C.

The coldest was back in 1922, where the average temperature was just 12.3°C.

Over the next few days though, you will be glad to hear temperatures are a lot warmer than that in London, with highs of 26°C forecast on Thursday (June 1).

The Met Office forecast for Thursday (June 1) says: "Most early mist and fog will clear, perhaps lingering along some south coasts.

"Otherwise, dry with bright spells, and feeling warm with increasing amounts of sunshine through the day."

So it looks like summer this year is starting exactly how we want it to - sunglasses at the ready everyone.
