A hero first aider saved the life of one of four men stabbed in Harrow town centre after using his shirt to stem his blood loss.

Trained first aider Martin Magowan, 33, from Ruislip, was waiting alone at Harrow bus garage when he witnessed the multiple stabbings in the early hours of Sunday (July 9) morning.

Thanks to his training as a scout leader, Mr Magowan knew exactly what to do in the terrifying situation.

He said: "I was waiting for a bus at the garage when I witnessed it.

"When I saw what happened, I took my shirt off, ran over, and used it to help stem the man's blood.

"I helped the man until paramedics arrived, talking to him, trying to keep him conscious.

"Police told me I'd saved the man's life."

Mr Magowan, a deputy catering manager at a private school in Hillingdon, had been enjoying a night out with friends before the violent events unfolded.

"It had been our first night out together for three-and-a-half years," he said.

"By the time this had happened, I was on my own. It was late and there was only myself and another girl in the bus station at the time."

Emergency services soon got to the scene and took over from Martin, who insists he did 'what anyone would do' in the situation.

He said: "I'm fine. I was covered in blood, but Harrow tube station staff helped me. I was covered head to toe.

"I was fine and knew what to do in that situation because I've trained as a scout leader.

"I think it's really important to learn first aid, and the scout's will teach you that as part of your training.

"The paramedics were really good, they got there quickly.

"And I must thank the TfL (Transport for London) staff at the station too as they helped me, gave me a new shirt and cleaned me up."

The town centre was cordoned off by police after the stabbings

Alongside his day job, Mr Magowan is the assistant leader of the Uxbridge 1st Cubs group, and hopes that more people will learn first aid in order to help in emergency situations.

"I'd like to think that someone in the cubs would do the same," Mr Magowan added.

"Anyone can become a scout leader, you just have to do a CRB check and then you're sent on a full training course with first aid.

"I want people to learn how to do this, I think it's really important as citizens that we know what to do in harrowing situations like this."

A total of four men were stabbed outside Harrow on the Hill Tube station following reports of a large fight.

Police were called to the scene by London Ambulance Service shortly before 3.45am, with the injured men taken to hospitals in north London.

'I hope this has given him more days on Earth'

A 23-year-old man was fighting for his life in hospital in a critical condition after sustaining his injury.

Metropolitan Police has confirmed (as of Wednesday, July 12) that the 23-year-old is now in a stable condition.

The three others, aged 19, 20 and 21, have been discharged from hospital.

Martin added: "I was really concerned for him, I hope he's doing well and I just hope this has given him more days on on the Earth.

"I'd like to wish the injured lads a speedy recovery and my prayers and thoughts are with them."

Two teenagers were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder on Monday (July 10).
