As Heathrow expansion moves one step forward with the launch of a public consultation, information events are due to be held across west London.

People will be able to speak to Department for Transport officials or ask them any information on the third runway plans outlined in the government's draft national policy statement, which favours the north-west runway option .from February 13.

From February 13, drop-in sessions will run for a period of one month on selected dates in boroughs including Hounslow, Hillingdon, Ealing, Kensington & Chelsea and Hammersmith & Fulham.

The all day weekday events will run from 11am to 8pm and on Saturday from 10am to 5pm.

Third runway plans at Heathrow reached a milestone yesterday as the government launched a four month public consultation today.

The proposals are outlined in a draft airports national policy statement (NPS) which sets out the need for additional airport capacity and reasons why the government believes a north-west runway at Heathrow is the best option.

Transport secretary Chris Grayling has highlighted the importance of a new runway to the post-Brexit economy, but the proposal continues to attract wide-spread criticism.

Heathrow executive director for expansion, Emma Gilthorpe, said: “The launch of the government’s national policy statement consultation is an important milestone in the delivery of Heathrow’s expansion plans."

MP for Ealing Southall, Virendra Sharma, added: “The need for additional airport capacity has become even more critical following the decision to leave the European Union."

Campaign group HACAN (Heathrow Association for the Control of Aircraft Noise) has urged ministers to "be bold enough" to reject the additional runway if the consultation reveals 'real problems' with the proposal.

HACAN chairman, John Stewart, said: “There is no way that a quarter of a million extra planes a year cannot but have a severe impact on many people’s lives."

The consultation closes on May 27 2017.
