A man whose body was found on top of an office block in Richmond after he plunged to his death from a plane headed for Heathrow Airport was a father from Mozambique.

Carlito Vale's body was discovered on the morning of June 19 after falling on the office block of online retailer Notonthehighstreet.com from a Johannesburg to Heathrow plane.

It was the third such death in the borough in the last three years.

Although Mr Vale has yet to be formally identified, authorities have contacted his orphanage in the Mozambique city of Beira to confirm he was the man.

It is believed that Mr Vale was taken in by the orphanage after the civil war in Mozambique, one of thousands of children who were given shelter during the turbulent time.

Another stowaway was also found on the same flight in the undercarriage of the aircraft and was a man believed to be aged 24.

The Metropolitan police can confirm that he survived the 10 hour flight from South Africa and steps are being taken to establish his identity.

Last year, Richmond councillor Tony Arbour, cabinet member for community safety, said: "With a possible expanding Heathrow and more flights coming in and out of the airport, someone really needs to take responsibility.

"I demand reassurance from the government, Heathrow and all airline carriers that they are going to sort out their clear security issues.

"How long will it be before someone falls onto a resident?"
