An Iraqi detainee at an immigration detention centre near Heathrow Airport has denied beating a fellow inmate to death at an immigration facility.

Zana Assad Yusif, 31, is accused of killing frail Bangladeshi man Tarek Chowdhury in a cell at Colnbrook Immigration Removal Centre on December 1 last year.

Mr Chowdhury, 64, was taken to hospital following a violent attack at the centre in Harmondsworth but was later pronounced dead.

Kurdish-speaking Yusif appeared at the Old Bailey via video link from jail on Friday ( April 7) and spoke only to confirm his name.

He entered a not-guilty plea to the charge of murder and a two-week trial is due to begin on May 8 with a further hearing scheduled for April 27.

Colnbrook detains people subject to immigration control and has the capacity to hold up to 396 men and 27 women.

The centre is adjacent to Heathrow Airport and is operated by Mitie Care and Custody, which won the contract to run the centre in 2014 after Serco ran it from its opening in 2004.
