Freezing fog forced Heathrow Airport to cancel around 100 flights this morning of (Monday January 23).

Passengers planning to fly to and from Heathrow were warned of travel chaos, with the airport advising those hoping to fly to check their flight status before journeying to the airport.

A yellow severe weather warning which was issued for London has now been lifted, but fog is forecast to stay with us during the week.

The Met Office forecast for the evening of Monday January 23 says: "There will be varying amounts of cloud and clear spells, but also a sharp frost for many places with freezing fog, which could become widespread and locally dense."

The capital will experience minimum temperatures of a bitter -6 °C.

Overnight on Sunday January 22, the lowest temperature in England was recorded in Northolt , a freezing -6.2°C.

On Tuesday January 24, further fog is forecast, with the Met Office stating: "Starting with a sharp frost and freezing fog for many areas, locally dense.

"Through the day the fog will mostly clear, leaving sunny spells for many places."

The Met Office forecast has predicted the freezing fog to continue into the middle of the week.

On Monday January 23, Heathrow Airport was forced to cancel flights because of the weather.

On their website, Heathrow Airport produced advice to passengers: "Foggy weather across London is expected on Monday 23 January and some passengers may experience disruption to their journey as a result.

"Heathrow advises passengers to check their flight status with their airline before coming to the airport.

"Heathrow's top priority is the safety of passengers and we apologise to those whose travel has been affected."

British Airways , who operate out of Heathrow, reported a reduced flight schedule.

A spokesman for the airline said:"For safety reasons Air Traffic Control has to allow greater space between landing aircraft in fog and this will mean a reduced number of aircraft being allowed to land each hour at Heathrow.

"As well as slightly reducing our Heathrow flight schedule, other flights are likely to be delayed throughout the morning.

"We are sorry for the difficulties caused by the poor weather and will do all we can to minimise the effect it has on our operations."
