Headteacher of Chiswick School, Tony Ryan, has stepped down from his position for "personal and professional reasons".

His decision to leave was announced on Tuesday (January 3) after leading the school on Burlington Lane, in Chiswick , for the past six-and-a-half years.

Jill Coughlan will replace him as interim headteacher and has taken up her post welcoming students back from the holidays on Wednesday (January 4).

During his time at the school, Mr Ryan has experienced highs and lows, with the downgrading in its latest Ofsted inspection in November 2015 , which he said was "harsh"

In 2014, he secured the school as the base to expand the Foucan Freerunning Academy, set up an actor who starred in James Bond's Casino Royale, Sébastien Foucan.

He was also one of the headteachers behind the now delayed opening of the Bolder Academy in Hounslow.

Mrs Coughlan was previously the interim headteacher at The Green School in Isleworth where she went on to become the chief executive of The Green School Trust.

A statement from Chiswick School said: "Tony Ryan has taken the decision to leave the school for personal and professional reasons.

"Mrs Coughlan is a highly regarded education specialist with an outstanding record in delivering sustainable school improvement in a number of schools.

"The board of governors would like to extend its thanks to Mr Ryan for his commitment, hard work and dedication to making the significant changes and improvement that have taken place at Chiswick School over the last six and a half years."
