A man from Harrow has been jailed after he spat at three police officers whilst in hospital.

Darren King, 29, of West Way in Ruislip , was detained by police , after they were called to Beaufort Road in Harrow at around 3.45am on Friday, February 17, following reports of a fight between two men.

Officers caught up with King, after he and another man fled as the police arrived.

Officers then took him to a north London hospital, as he had sustained injuries to his head and hand, and was complaining of a pain in his leg.

Upon arrival to hospital and whilst waiting in A&E, the 29-year-old began verbally abusing the officers.

King was detailed after police were called to Beaufort Road in Harrow

A special constable tried to quieten him, by asking him not to speak in that way, following which, King verbally abused and then spat in the special constable's face, throwing blood and saliva onto his forehead.

After being arrested by a PC, for assaulting an officer, he was taken into an A&E bay, where he spat once again, this time causing blood and saliva to go into the arresting officer's eye.

He continued to be verbally aggressive, which caused alarm to the surrounding public and medical staff.

King continued to spit in the face of another PC, he was then restrained on the A&E bed and arrested for the assaults on the other two PCs.

The two PCs went to St Thomas' Hospital for blood tests, after blood and saliva went into their eyes.

They are currently waiting for the results.

King was charged on February, 18, and pleaded guilty at Willesden Magistrates' Court on Friday (May 26) to three counts of assaulting a police officer.

He was sentenced to 12 weeks behind bars and must pay a total of £225 compensation, £75 to each officer.

Investigating officer, Detective Sergeant Phil Moor, said: "The custodial sentence given to King today shows how seriously the courts take assaults on police officers.

"These officers were trying to help King prior to him receiving treatment at the hospital, but despite this he spat in their faces, going into the mouth and eyes of one officer and the eyes of another.

"The impact of this vile offence was significant and the possible health implications for the officers and their families is apparent.

"Today's sentencing sends a clear message that assaulting police officers is completely unacceptable behaviour for which those responsible can expect to face the full weight of the criminal justice system."
