Fundraisers at Cancer Research UK Relay For life Harrow are celebrating raising over £500,000 for the charity through their long-running fundraising events.

The group raises money by asking groups of family, work colleagues and friends to team up to raise money in their communities.

The fundraising year culminates in the Relay for Life weekend at Bannister Sports Centre, including a family fun day, celebration of survivorship and a moving candlelight vigil, the Candle of Hope Ceremony.

The fundraisers take part in a relay event, where members of each team take it in turns to walk, run, skip, hop or even bounce their way around Bannister Stadium for the duration of the event, totalling a staggering 21 hours!

Committee member Mark Clements said: “We get 90-year-old relayers who have survived cancer a number of times, and we get toddlers who are just learning to walk. We all do what we can together.

“For some people walking a single lap is a real achievement, while others like to walk or jog for an hour or more at a time.

"Cancer affects so many people, and by sharing the burden and walking around the clock, we are standing shoulder-to-shoulder with those affected.

“Cancer never sleeps, and neither do we.”

Relay For Life Harrow are on the lookout for new teams to help raise the next £500,000 and beat cancer sooner.

Pinner resident Gillian Moss, avid Relayer and one of Harrow Relay’s founders, has seen it all.

“Teams are so inventive in how they raise funds - they can and will do anything!" she said. "This year alone our team has held a rock and roll dance and an open garden.

“Other teams have held raffles, karaoke nights, bake sales or taken part in good old fashioned busking! The important thing is you’re involved; joining together with your friends and family and saying: 'We are stronger than cancer'.”
