Nearly 2,000 "super dustbins" will be installed in a bid to rat-proof Harrow borough.
The roll-out will see the number of public bins doubled, and existing bins replaced with the "larger, cleaner and more attractive" versions.
The "rubbish revolution" comes after disgusting footage of hordes of rats invading rubbish bags went viral in July this year.
New bins, provided by Harrow Council, will be able to hold more rubbish and have a “postbox-style” opening, an ashtray feature for cigarette ends, and a heavy, robust "rat-proof" base.

The council will replace 50 bins a fortnight with the new versions and will add extra bins to the streets that need them most.
Harrow and Wealdstone station was made a priority after a member of the public raised concerns about there being too much rubbish there.
Councillor Graham Henson, portfolio holder for environment, said: "Part of making Harrow clean again is giving people enough decent litter bins so everyone can throw their rubbish away properly.
"They’re easier for us to collect – and they’ll cut down the fly-tipping blighting our borough.
"By the time we’re finished – we’ll have doubled the number of litter bins in Harrow."
Currently, Harrow has dozens of different kinds of litter bin – large, small, black, green and "many in a state of disrepair", say the council.
The new Harrow and Wealdstone station bins will be emptied twice a day.
The council has also added new bins to the town centre, both in Station Road and in the underpass near Morrisons, where flower beds have also been treated to deter vermin.
