Work is under way on the building of new offices which will bring more than 2,500 jobs to Hammersmith.

Legal & General and Mitsubishi Estate London are developing a 12-storey building at 245 Hammersmith Road in place of the current Bechtel House building in a scheme worth £275 million.

Work is currently under way to demolish the existing building, with construction of the new premises expected to begin in February 2017.

Employment in the area is set to benefit after the developers agreed to ensure local people are trained and employed on site.

As well as offices, the building will include space for restaurants, a café and a new plaza, and has already attracted significant interest from businesses - particularly from major blue chip companies.

Councillor Ben Coleman, head of commercial revenue and resident satisfaction, was at the empty Bechtel House last month, when major crushing equipment was hoisted into place. He said: “I’m delighted by this boost for business in Hammersmith and by Legal & General’s commitment to provide work for local people and firms on the development.”

Simon Wilkes, head of business space development at Legal & General, added: “245 Hammersmith Road will set a new standard for the area, creating a modern collaborative working environment, a new green space and restaurants and cafes. All this will be to the benefit Hammersmith and further drive interest in this prominent part of London.

“We are delighted with the support shown by councillors and look forward to continuing our strong working relationship as the development takes shape.”

Businesses are expected to move into 245 Hammersmith Road at the end of 2017.

Earlier this year work was completed on another office block in the heart of Hammersmith.
