Hammersmith and Fulham now boasts 13 world-class green spaces after an additional two parks were awarded Green Flag status.

Furnivall Gardens and Wormholt Park were added to a list of 11 in the borough which have been judged to meet Keep Britain Tidy’s strict criteria for the best parks in the country.

The Green Flag scheme, now in its 21st year, recognises parks with the highest standards of cleanliness, horticulture and facilities.

Among those listed include Margravine Cemetery , in Hammersmith.

Ruth Savery is secretary of the Friends of Margravine Cemetery and said: “We’re very proud that our wonderful green space has once again been recognised with a Green Flag.

“The cemetery is a vital part of our community, providing space and calm in a busy part of London. Studies have shown that regular contact with trees appears to improve our immune system function and our wellbeing, and we know that thousands of people pass through the cemetery every day.

“We’re fortunate to have the support of H&F Council who understand the importance of the cemetery, and who provide two excellent gardeners to maintain it.

“We have many generous volunteers who help with additional gardening such as tree planting and maintenance, as well as organising activities for children and adults to enjoy.”

And Cllr Wesley Harcourt, head of environment at the council, added: “We want to be the greenest borough in the country and key to that is protecting our parks for future generations of residents and visitors.

“This superb news is testament to the hard work of the staff who maintain the parks and the local residents and ‘friends of’ groups that we work closely with to preserve them.”

Green Flags are judged by experts, who visit all the applicant sites and assess them against eight strict criteria, including horticultural standards, cleanliness, sustainability and community involvement.
