Sadiq Khan is to face questions over the proposed Hammersmith flyunder at Mayor's Question Time this week.

The project received backing from former mayor Boris Johnson and even got a nod in George Osborne's 2015 Budget, but little has been heard about it since then.

A report published in 2014 put forward three possible plans for the flyunder, to replace the decaying Hammersmith flyover on the A4 in west London.

The options included a tunnel that started and ended in the same location as the current flyover, as well as one shorter than the current flyover and another that stretched further west, towards the M4 and M25.

The tunnels were calculated to cost anywhere from £218m and £1.7bn, depending on length and scale, and could have taken as little as three years to complete.

The flyover would be flattened, with the possibility of building additional housing on the site.

The flyover is under criticism for being in constant need of repairs over the past decade, as well as the effect it has on magnifying road sounds and adverse impact on air quality in the area.

Questions submitted to the mayor at his quarterly question time include: "Do you support the Hammersmith flyunder project?" and "What action have you taken to implement the proposed Hammersmith flyunder?".

Caroline Pidgeon, the Liberal Democrat Assembly Member, who submitted the questions to the mayor said: "The ugly, noisy motorway separating Hammersmith from the river would give way to green spaces - including a restored, larger Furnivall Gardens.

"After so much talk about this scheme it is time both Hammersmith Council and the Mayor of London finally came together and agreed whether they want to turn this proposed scheme into a reality.”

Sadiq Khan will provide oral answers to the questions at Mayor's Question Time on Thursday (September 14) and a full written response on Tuesday (September 19).
