Hammersmith Bridge has reopened to traffic after nine days of essential repair .

The historic river crossing had closed during the half term holidays to allow for replacement of the bridge decking and road surface panels .

It meant drivers were sent on diversions via Chiswick Bridge and Putney Bridge, while several bus routes terminated at the bridge before continuing on the other side.

The 130-year-old bridge, which connects Hammersmith with Barnes, had closed on February 11, but remained open to pedestrians and cyclists.

Hammersmith Bridge currently operates under severe weight restrictions with only one bus in each direction permitted on the bridge at any one time.

Full refurbishment is scheduled to take place in late 2018 and will include overall strengthening of the structure and an improved road surface.

However, the precise repair work to be carried out has not yet been identified, but will be assessed over the coming year.
