Hammersmith Bridge has reopened after it was closed for more than four hours on Saturday while police dealt with a distressed man seen standing on its edge.

Officers were called to the crossing at 11.45am on Saturday and kept the road closed for more than nearly five hours, until 4.35pm, when the man was rescued.

Users on Twitter reported a lot of police activity at the site, with one man saying he say a police boat with armed officers heading to the bridge.

Others said the man was threatening to jump off the bridge.

One user posted an image which appeared to show the distressed man.

The incident comes a week after a man barricaded himself inside a property in Northolt , prompting a three-day stand-off with police.

Congestion is expected while traffic returns to normal.
