Motorists and Hammersmith residents have been warned to expect significant disruption to roads as Hammersmith Bridge closes for repair works.

The historic bridge, which is 130 years old, is undergoing essential repair works ahead of major repairs which will be carried out in 2018.

The bridge remains in use for pedestrians but closed to motorists from 5pm on Saturday (October 21) until early morning on Sunday (October 29).

Hammersmith and Fulham Council , which owns and maintains the bridge, said the period of time was chosen to coincide with half-term holidays in order to minimise the disruption felt on the roads.

Traffic will be diverted over Chiswick Bridge and Putney Bridge, meaning regular users may experience extra traffic or disruptions.

At present there are strict weight restrictions on the narrow bridge and just one bus is allowed to travel across the bridge at any given time in each direction.

The Grade II listed structure is responsible for 20,000 vehicle crossings across the Thames every day, meaning full refurbishment has become necessary and will be carried out in late 2018.

Councillor Wesley Harcourt, H&F cabinet member for environment, transport and residents’ services said: "The safety of everyone using our historic bridge is our priority and regrettably these urgent repairs are essential to keeping the bridge safe and operational ahead of the major refurbishment work.”

The bridge is now 130 years old and needs emergency works to tide it over until a major 2018 refurbishment

But how do I get where I need to be?

Hammersmith and Fulham Council has issued the following travel advice while the bridge is shut for emergency repairs:

Motorists will be diverted via Chiswick Bridge and Putney Bridge. Both footways will remain open to pedestrians and cyclists, who will have to dismount to cross.

Take care when crossing as it may be busier than usual.

The following bus services will terminate in Castelnau, Barnes: 33, 209, 485. While the 419 will terminate in Lonsdale Road, Barnes.

Passengers can walk across the bridge to resume their journeys.

For those less mobile, some 72 bus services will be diverted via Chiswick Bridge, the remainder will terminate ahead before Hammersmith Bridge – please check before travelling.
