The contractor behind the refurbishment of Grenfell Tower is in line for a £65m deal with Ealing Council to renovate an entire estate.

Rydon has been approved by Ealing Council's cabinet as the development partner for the redevelopment of High Lane Estate in Hanwell.

The firm has previously partnered with the council and A2Dominion on the £155 million redevelopment of Green Man Lane social housing estate due to be completed in 2019.

Earlier this year 3,037 council homes in Ealing failed to meet basic government standards.

Rydon's 2015 renovation of Grenfell Tower, in Kensington and Chelsea, has come under intense scrutiny after it emerged that cladding with a flammable core was used.

While the cause of the fire is still not known, an investigation is under way and the government has asked all councils to investigate whether they have used similar cladding on their social housing developments.

Up to 600 tower blocks in England are believed to have similar cladding to Grenfell and the covering on three so far has been found to be combustible.

The High Lane Estate redevelopment is still in its early stages and Rydon will be expected to finance, develop and submit a planning application that will go before the council.

High Lane Estate, Hanwell

getwestlondon understands the plans would see the current estate demolished and replaced with mixed-tenure housing, with significant numbers of "affordable homes".

A spokesman for Ealing Council said: “The High Lane estate scheme is in a very early stage. All designs will be fully consulted on with residents and partners and will meet all fire safety standards.

"The current outdated housing blocks will be replaced by new mixed-tenure blocks that meet all modern fire safety standards.

"There can be no comparison made with the construction methods or materials at Grenfell Tower.”

The council went on to say that the council does not over-clad its high rise blocks and that most of its concrete tower blocks have a brick or rendered finish.
