A huge aid project is underway beneath the Westway flyover and in the shadow of the charred remains of Grenfell Tower.

Volunteers are sifting through huge amounts of donations outside Latymer Community Church, and at nearby Westway Sports and Fitness Centre, one of the outdoor playing courts is filing with goods left by those shocked by the brutal fire on Wednesday (June 14).

The sports centre is still acting as emergency shelter for those displaced.

Human chain gangs are being formed passing boxes of food and water while hot food is also being served.

Free food is also being offered from another table, including pizza, fruit cakes, soft drinks and water, sandwiches and crisps.

"People are united. I'm proud to be part of this community and this city."

Meanwhile, outside Westway Sports centre, Penny Sims from the Red Cross said: "The reaction yesterday was amazing. People wanted to help.

"We've had some really thoughtful donations, like kids books and toys.

"We also appealed for sanitation products. Things you'd find in your bathroom but toothpaste and brushes.

"But we've reached the point where there's so much stuff, and our effort now is to sort through it."

And she asked people with ready to give more donations to be patient: "Please sit on it for a few days and wait for updates.

"We're going to need help for a long time, items will be needed for a long time still to come.

"But I must say the response has been amazing. It's just lovely."

So far 17 people have been confirmed dead and 17 others remain in hospital in critical care.
