A brainy Greenford student who achieved an incredible result of two A*s and two As has been left without a place at university.

Batool Alharahsheh was pleased to see she had exceeded her target grades with A*s in Arabic and biology and As in maths and chemistry when she opened her results at Villiers High School in Southall on Thursday (August 18).

But astonishingly, the 18-year-old has been left without a university place as Birmingham University and University College London still chose not to offer her a place to study medicine.

The 18-year-old has now set her sights on a place at Imperial College to study medicine, after going through clearing.

The Greenford teen said: "It is very unusual to be in this position, most of the pupils going through clearing didn't do as well as they expected.

"I exceed my predict grades yet I don't have a place. It is pretty nerve racking to be honest. After all this hard work I still do not know where I am going to be next year.

"You do your absolute best, get good grades and still you have to go through all this."

'Bit unusual'

She added: "I'm so thankful for the teachers at my school. They have been so great. They have calmed me down and given me loads of good advise.

"The competition for places at these top universities to study medicine is extremely high.

"It's super hard to get in even if you get the very best marks you can possible get. Hopefully I can get into Imperial to study medicine now, that's the dream."

Head of sixth form Patrick Cootes said: "I have to say with two A* and two A grades, among the best in the country, it is a bit unusual to not get a place at university.

"Having said that, I am confident that with such amazing grades there will be a number of university very pleased to have her.

"I'm sure she will get a place through clearing. Who knows, it might all work out for the best."
