The family of a widowed grandmother who was on her way to church when she was hurt in a hit-and-run are pleading for witnesses to come forward.

Veronica Greene, 62, was crossing Sutton Court Road, in Hillingdon, when a car hit her at around 7.15pm on Tuesday (March 24).

She was rushed to hospital with a suspected fractured arm, a dislocated shoulder, a possible broken nose and a deep cut above her eye, which needed stitches.

The grandmother-of-two's niece has pleaded for witnesses to come forward and urged the driver to turn him or herself in.

Lalita Scott, 42, of Regents Avenue, Hillingdon, said: “If anyone saw anything – even the person that did it could be reading – please go to the police.”

She added: “It's crazy that someone could just leave her like that. It could have been a lot worse.

“You shouldn't be able to sleep at night knowing what happened. It's just not humane.”

Retired council post room officer Mrs Greene had been on her way to St Bernadette's RC Church, where she volunteers as a catechist, when she was knocked down in the middle of the 30mph-road, near the junction with Long Lane.

Dazed and confused, the mother-of-three, who also volunteers at nearby St Bernadette's RC Junior and Infant School, managed to stumble back to her home in Windsor Avenue, where her children called for an ambulance.

Ms Scott said: “She was in major shock, bleeding from everywhere – her nose, her eye. She wasn't aware of what was going on.”

At Hillingdon Hospital, Mrs Green was given morphine and had her shoulder popped back into its socket and her cut stitched, before being discharged.

She is now recovering at home, where she lives with her three children, and is waiting to see a bone specialist.

She said: “I'm slowly getting better, but I'm still in shock.

“It happened so quick. Nobody stopped. No one was there and no one came to help. I was just shocked. What a stupid person.

"A lot of children cross that road to go to school. There are so many cars there. They should do something about it.”

She added that she counter herself "lucky" not to have been more seriously injured.

Police are reviewing CCTV footage from the scene and have appealed for witnesses to come forward.
