The exterior of this Victorian church in Brentford has been peeled back, offering a fascinating peek inside a piece of the area’s rich history.

St George’s Church, in High Street, Brentford, has been gutted, with the roof and windows removed, as it is converted into housing .

Work began last spring to convert the church and adjoining Grade II-listed hall into 21 homes , which are scheduled for completion this autumn.

The church was built in 1886 and had been home to the Musical Museum until 2007, when it closed and the museum moved up the road to new purpose-built premises.

The neighbouring Sarah Trimmer Hall, which is also being converted by IDM Properties, was home to one of the country’s oldest Sunday schools.

Queen Charlotte, the wife of George III, had been an unofficial patron of the school, named after its founder, as she spent a lot of time across the river at Kew Gardens and took a keen interest in efforts to educate Brentford's poor.

The church had previously been threatened with demolition but was saved following a campaign by local residents.

The stained glass windows and a number of memorial stones removed during the conversion are due to be preserved at the London Museum of Water & Steam, which is just up the road near Kew Bridge.
