Giant poppies have been displayed around Hounslow town centre to remind people of the sacrifices made by men and women in war.

As the borough prepares to come together to mark this year's Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday , poppies have been attached to lampposts between Douglas Road and Bell Road.

Shoppers and residents passing through the town centre will be able to see the visual display thanks to a donation made by Hounslow council to the Royal British Legion's (RBL) Poppy Appeal.

Councillor Foote, cabinet member for community protection and a member of the RBL Hanworth branch said: “It was something we as a council wanted to do.

"They are really impressive, you can see them as you walk around and I know they are being warmly received by everyone in our borough.

“It is all part of remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice but also to raise awareness for the support the RBL provides.”

Mr Foote was joined in the town centre by Peter Casey, from the RBL Hounslow branch and Rob Gillespie, Hounslow Highways service director.

Mark Bishop, community fundraiser, South West London RBL, said: “We would like to thank Hounslow Council and the local community for their continuing generous support of the Poppy Appeal.

"Having such a strong visual message will help us to raise more funds to allow the Armed Forces community to Live On”.

Money from donations for poppies will help RBL provide assistance and support to Armed Forces veterans, serving personnel and their families.

Mr Gillespie added: “There has been a very positive reaction to the poppies and it is part of how we want to further strengthen community engagement and the feeling of inclusion for everyone in the borough.”
