Shoppers in Hounslow were quick to show their generosity as police kicked off their Christmas appeal for children in care and pensioners.

The Met's 2015 Christmas Tree Project was officially launched in Hounslow High Street last Tuesday (November 10) by Superintendent Mike Hill.

He switched on the lights of the campaign's Christmas tree, which is decorated with ribbons letting people know how they can lend their support.

Mr Hill, who was joined by Hounslow's deputy mayor Myra Savin and other dignitaries for the launch, said: "Hounslow police are grateful to all those who took part in last year's campaign to spread some Christmas cheer.

"We hope we can do better this year and give gifts to more children. We also aim to support local charities who are holding events on Christmas Day for pensioners living alone and provide them with gifts."

Within hours of the switch-on, police said a number of gifts had been donated and passing shoppers had handed over more than £200.

Police delivered more than 150 gifts to children in care across Hounslow last year thanks to the public's generosity, and this year they also plan to bring festive cheer to pensioners in the borough.

To give a gift, you can take a tagged ribbon from the tree and follow the instructions or visit the virtual Christmas tree at www.met.police.uk/christmastree/hounslow .
