A gang who kidnapped a man before demanding ransom from his family have been jailed for more than 45 years.

Ryan Cahill, 23, Barry Penrose, 28, Anthimos Tooley, 54, and 28-year-old George Rock were all handed hefty prison sentences for their part in the kidnap of a 38-year-old victim.

Isleworth Crown Court heard how the man's car was rammed from behind by a van when he was travelling home at 2pm on Monday, August 15 2016 in Stanmore .

He proceeded to get out of his vehicle to inspect the damage and was immediately approached by the van driver, Rock, who punched him in the face.

The victim was then further assaulted by Rock, Penrose and Cahill before being bundled into the back of the van.

The kidnappers then began calling the victim's family demanding they withdraw money from a safety deposit box, even telling his family they would "blow off" the victim's head if they did not agree.

Penrose was handed a prison sentence of 13 years and 5 months

At around 9.15pm on August 16 last year, the kidnappers made a final demand call, but still no funds were exchanged.

During the early hours of the following morning, police, who had managed to trace the suspects, forced entry into an address in Hadley Wood in Barnet.

Rock and Penrose were detained while attempting to flee the address and Cahill was tracked down by a police helicopter in a nearby garden.

Tooley was sentenced to 16 years in prison

Police found the victim in the basement, bound to a chair with two fractured ribs, a laceration to the left leg, bruises and burn injuries to the wrist and a minor knife wound.

According to police, he had also been threatened to his face with a blow torch.

Tooley was later arrested by police at Alexandra Road, Borehamwood, on the September 6 2016.

Cahill received a sentence of 6 years and 8 months

"This crime has had a serious and lasting impact on the victim and his family," said Detective Sergeant Dan Mitchell, from the Modern Slavery and Kidnap Unit.

Adding: "The victim showed remarkable bravery in spite of being imprisoned, tortured and threatened with his life.

"I am pleased that the offenders have now been brought to justice."
