The Victoria Line platform at King's Cross station could be a glimpse at what all London Underground platforms might look like in the future.

The revolution is essentially just some carefully positioned green paint.

From July, Transport for London has been trialling "green lanes" on the platform to indicate where the doors to the train will be when it arrives.

Commuters are asked not to stand in the green areas, to make getting on and off the tube trains simpler and avoid congested entrances and exits.

There is also a channel of green running along the platform, to make it easier for those getting off the trains to leave the platform.

The idea, put forward by members of station staff to Transport for London, aims to encourage people to move down the length of the platform from the entrances at each end.

London Underground is hoping that if people know exactly where the doors are to the train, they will spread out and make boarding more efficient.

While the lane has been in place since July, TfL says it is aware that summer holidays mean fewer people using the trains at peak times, so will continue to trial the lanes in autumn for a better understanding of its affect on rush-hour platforms.

If successful, the green lane system may be rolled out to more and more stations on the underground network.

Some commuters may feel short changed though, having calculated the best position on the platform through years of commuting, any new visitor to the city will have the same expertise as them on having a crush-free commute.

If you need help on your commute, our getwestlondon top tip is to have a look on the platform and see where the yellow warming line is most faded. Chances are that's where millions before you have hopped on and off.

Don't forget to mind the gap!
