Leaving Christmas present shopping until the last minute can be stressful enough without having the added strain of having to pay for parking.

So as purse strings tighten in the run up to the big day, Hounslow Council is offering free parking for locals so they can shop 'til they drop.

Parking will be free in council controlled car parks and in paid-for parking spaces on the street on Saturday December 23.

Councillor Amrit Mann, deputy leader of Hounslow Council, hopes the gesture will provide a boost to local business.

He said: "We like to make this small gesture to help residents and shoppers get those last-minute presents.

"We hope that lifting normal restrictions during this time will make things a little easier for everyone trying to get around the borough and give a boost to our local businesses."

Normal Bank Holiday restrictions will apply on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and News Year's Day, with normal charges applied from December 27 until December 31.

Hounslow Council is advising motorists to be aware that other parking restrictions such as double yellow lines will still be in place and will be enforced during this time.
