A free microchipping session for dogs will take place this month in Chelsea ahead of a change in the law for owners later this year.

Kensington and Chelsea Council ’s Parks Police is teaming up with the Dogs Trust to offer the service on January 14 (Thursday) at Westfield Park.

While there, owners can also have their pooches' nails trimmed for free, get advice on a free dog-neutering service and let their pet try out an dog-agility course.

From April 6 all dog owners must ensure that their pets are microchipped. The new law has been introduced by the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) and extends to all dogs older than eight weeks.

The government says lost and stray dogs cost the taxpayer and welfare charities £33 million a year.

It is hoped that the legislation will help to promote responsible dog ownership and reduce the burden on animal charities and local authorities by making it easier to reunite lost pets with their owners.

People who do not have their dog microchipped after April 6 could end up with a criminal prosecution and a £500 fine.

The Parks Police is planning on hosting more sessions before the law comes into effect. For information email parkspolice@rbkc.gov.uk
