The former England and Chelsea star Ray Wilkins was arrested on suspicion of drink driving near Heathrow Airpor t on Friday (July 1) and is to appear at Uxbridge Magistrates' Court.

Wilkins, 59, now a football pundit, was arrested after he appeared at a charity golf event in Chiswick , on Friday.

He is believed to have spent the night in police cells before being bailed after his Mercedes SL400 was stopped by police.

During his career Wilkins played at various clubs including AC Milan and Queens Park Rangers , as well as working a Fulham manager and later a Chelsea coach.

He was awarded an MBE in 1993 for services to football.

The England star had been pictured beaming next to a stand at the 2016 Mini Masters earlier in the day.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman confirmed Ray - known as 'Butch' - has been charged with the offence.

They said: “Ray Wilkins - 59 of The Laurels, Cobham - was charged on July 2 with drink driving.

"He has been bailed to appear at Uxbridge Magistrates’ Court on 18 July.

“This follows an incident at approximately 8.10pm on Friday July 1, when officers from the Met’s Aviation Policing Command arrested a man on suspicion of drink driving on the Northern Perimeter Road close to Heathrow Airport.

“He was taken to a west London police station and charged as above.”
