A flat and shop in Wembley were on Monday (March 22) damaged by a fire, with 20 people rescued.

London Fire Brigade (LFB) said they were called to the shop and the flat above it, in Ealing Road, at 10.18pm.

The alarm was raised by a shop worker who had smelt smoke, before alerting LFB and residents in the flat above the shop.

Four fire engines and 21 firefighters attended the blaze, which was under control by 12.05am, and led around 20 people to safety with no injuries.

LFB said the fire badly damaged the ground floor and the staircase leading to the first floor, where a flat was partly affected.

The cause of the fire is believed to be accidental but there was no fire alarm fitted in the property.

An LFB spokesperson said: "Everyone should have at least one smoke alarm on every level of your home and the safest option is to have those linked together.

"This will give the earliest warning if there is a fire in your home."

Fire crews from Park Royal, Acton and Ealing attended the scene.
