A family of four, including two children, escaped a house fire believed to have been caused by an unattended candle at their Wembley home.

Part of the loft space of a semi detached house, in Carlyon Road, and a small part of the neighbouring property’s loft space, were damaged by fire on Sunday (July 2).

Thankfully, two adults and two children left the property before firefighters got to the scene, and there were no reports of any injuries.

It took London Fire Brigade (LFB) firefighters nearly one-and-a-half hours to contain the blaze after they were called at 12.21pm.

Four fire engines and 21 firefighters and officers from Wembley, Park Royal, Acton and Ealing fire stations attended the scene.

Candles are one of the most common causes of fire, say London Fire Brigade

Now firefighters have issued a candle safety warning after investigators believe the fire was caused by a candle left unattended.

An LFB spokesperson said: “Candles are one of the most common causes of fire.

"It’s really important that you never leave a candle unattended and keep them away from curtains and anything else that can easily catch fire.”

Top candle safety tips

  • Always place your candles/tea lights in a suitable fire resistant candleholder.
  • Make sure the candleholder holds the candle/tea light firmly and is on a flat and stable surface to stop it falling over.
  • Make sure you put out any candles, incense and oil burners when you leave the room and especially before bed.
