Staff at Costa Coffee in Westminster proved they have keen noses for more than just coffee beans after alerting firefighters to a neighbouring flat fire.

Fire crews were called to Costa Coffee just off Edgware Road in Westminster on Wednesday afternoon (August 31) after a fire broke out in an upstairs flat.

London Fire Brigade (LFB) were called to the scene in George Street at 2.55pm after staff in the coffee shop smelled smoke.

Two fire engines were sent to the store and the fire was quickly brought under control without customers of the Costa being evacuated.

A member of staff at Costa told getwestlondon: “We have some flats upstairs. [The fire brigade] said someone was cooking upstairs and it caught fire.

“I asked them to come and check. It wasn't too much smoke but we could smell it."

Firefighters brought the fire under control by 3.15pm.

A spokesperson for LFB said: “We were called at 2.55pm. It appears to be a small fire.

“The cause is under investigation."
