A detective responsible for catching some of London's worst criminals has been served a final written warning following a common assault caution.

Detective Constable Darrell Jones allegedly attacked a 26-year-old man while off duty in Temple Place, Westminster .

Following the incident on December 8 last year, he accepted a police caution for common assault.

DC Jones is attached to the Metropolitan Police's Serious and Organised Crime Command, which catches drug dealers, firearms traffickers, targets criminal networks, deals with hostage situations and provides intelligence to specialist services.

He was served with a final written warning following a one-day special case hearing, on Wednesday August 23.

The allegations against him were proven, said the Metropolitan Police in a statement a week later (Wednesday August 30), and "the appropriate action was to serve the officer with a final written warning."

Assistant Commissioner, and chair of the hearing, Martin Hewitt, said: "The Met is committed to delivering a professional service of the highest standard to the public and expects its employees to conduct themselves professionally at all times, whether on or off-duty.

"When officers fail to meet this expectation this brings discredit to the Met and has the potential to impact negatively on public trust and confidence.

"DC Jones has admitted guilt in this matter and accepted a police caution.

"I have therefore decided that the appropriate sanction is a final written warning."
